Update on Situation in Kanehsatake
As of late yesterday afternoon, it appears the RCMP and Surete de Quebec have refused to offer Jimmy Gabriel "protection" should he choose to return to the community.
Apparently the Federal Government has for the moment sobered to the fact that the community of Kanehsatake is not going to tolerate invasion whether by the RCMP, SQ or some sort of private militia and an operation on the scale that would be needed to perform such an incursion would be so potentially explosive that it would simply not be palatable to the public at large.
As for Jimmy, community members have said that no such "protection" would be necessary anyway should he simply respect the wishes of the people and stop trying to represent Kanehsatake politically. It seems though that Kanehsatake may be the least of Gabriel's problems - reports are his own "goon squad" has gone without pay for three weeks, and they'll have to get in line behind the hotels he's been hiding out in where it appears Jimmy has "dined and dashed."
While Kanehsatake readies itself for its election call, community members would like to hope that events today represent an indication that they will be free to choose their own leadership without having to fight off outside interference. While for the moment that threat seems to have subsided somewhat, recent events have taught the community to be ever vigilant and updates will be posted should renewed threat or pressures be brought to bear.
Nia:wen kowa to all those readied themselves once again.
